MEMA Physician Spotlight: Mark K. Zeller, MD

Why did you choose the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for medical school?

The University of Miami offered outstanding educational opportunities and allowed me to work at multiple high acuity hospitals, care for a diverse patient population, and I was taught by amazing faculty members.  The location wasn’t too bad either!

Tell us why did you choose Carolinas Medical Center for residency?

Carolinas Medical Center had everything I was looking for in a residency program: a busy trauma center with a collegial work environment and nationally renowned faculty members.  The experiences during my residency provided me learning opportunities I would not have found elsewhere.  Additionally, my wife and I were excited to live in Charlotte.

Tell us more about how you came to choose the field of medicine?

Originally, I planned a career in research, but throughout my time in college, I realized I wanted a more direct relationship with the individuals my work affected.  After spending some time shadowing at Emory University Hospital, I was hooked and knew I couldn’t see myself in any other career.  The ability to have an immediate and positive impact on those around you is something unique to medicine and makes me excited to go to work every day.

How did you choose Emergency Medicine as your specialty?

Interacting with a diverse cross-section of patients was something I found rewarding.  From pediatrics to geriatrics, and from broken bones to heart attacks, we really see it all in emergency medicine.  Additionally, it is gratifying to help people on what is often one of the scariest days of their life.

What do you enjoy most about your day to day practice?

My favorite part of my day to day practice is the people I interact with.  From my patients to the nursing staff, to my fellow physicians and providers, I enjoy the collaborative atmosphere that Novant and MEMA have fostered in our hospitals.

What led you to practice with MEMA?

After finishing residency locally, I knew I wanted to live in Charlotte.  MEMA provides excellent patient care and a supportive work environment that was exactly what I was looking for.  I have enjoyed meeting and working with everyone at MEMA and love the family feel of the organization.

Are you a member of any associations, societies, or organizations?

I am a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) as well as the North Carolina chapter (NCCEP).

What about Charlotte excites you?

Charlotte offers all the big city amenities while still maintaining a small-town feel. It is also perfectly located – you can visit the beach, spend a day on the lake, hike in the mountains, or go skiing.  All of these are close by and make for a lot of fun choices for the weekend!

Do you have any hobbies, interests, secret powers that are unique to you?

When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, heading out to the Whitewater Center, exploring the numerous Greenways around Charlotte, and jogging with my dog, Beau.
