Please tell us which program you chose for your Physician Assistant studies. Why did this program make the top of your list?

I chose to pursue my Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies at Elon University. After my interview with the program’s Medical Director, it became evident that Elon fosters a student-centered learning environment. A discussion about my personal statement highlighted the program’s commitment to understanding and supporting individual goals. Additionally, Elon’s excellent reputation and its proximity to my hometown of Atlanta solidified my decision to join this distinguished program.

Tell us more about how you came to choose the field of medicine. What about becoming a PA was attractive?

My journey into medicine began with a strong desire to make a difference in people’s lives through compassionate, hands-on care. Starting as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and later transitioning to roles as a Medical Assistant (MA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), I gained invaluable experience in patient care and developed a deep passion for healthcare. I chose the Physician Assistant (PA) profession because it offers the perfect balance of autonomy in clinical decision-making and collaboration within a team. The flexibility to work in various specialties, coupled with the opportunity to provide holistic, patient-centered care, was highly attractive to me. Observing PAs in action solidified my decision, as their ability to combine clinical expertise with empathy and adaptability inspired me to pursue a career where I can truly impact lives.

How did you choose Emergency Medicine as your specialty? What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day practice?

My decision to pursue Emergency Medicine as my specialty stems from my experiences in fast-paced, high-pressure environments and my desire to make a meaningful impact during critical moments in patients’ lives. Working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) early in my healthcare journey exposed me to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of emergency care, where quick thinking and decisive action can be lifesaving. This experience fueled my passion for acute care and prepared me to thrive under pressure.

During my clinical rotations, I was drawn to the Emergency Department’s diverse cases and collaborative environment. I appreciated the opportunity to work as part of a team to address complex medical needs while maintaining compassion and composure. Emergency Medicine offers the perfect combination of challenges and rewards, allowing me to use my clinical skills to stabilize patients, manage various conditions, and provide immediate relief in moments of crisis.

Ultimately, I chose Emergency Medicine because it aligns with my adaptability, problem-solving, and patient advocacy strengths. It is a field where I can make an immediate difference and continue to learn and grow throughout my career.

What led you to practice with MEMA?

MEMA stood out because of its reputation for clinical excellence, teamwork focus, and commitment to continuous learning and professional development. I was particularly impressed by MEMA’s emphasis on providing comprehensive emergency care and the opportunity to work alongside experienced clinicians who are dedicated to improving patient outcomes during critical moments. Their approach to care aligns with my passion for working in a fast-paced, diverse medical environment where I can leverage my skills to make an immediate impact.

Additionally, MEMA’s investment in its providers and its culture of collaboration resonated with me. I knew it would be the ideal place to grow as a new Physician Assistant, gain mentorship, and contribute meaningfully to the community. Joining MEMA felt like the perfect step to launch my career in Emergency Medicine.

Has there been one patient, staff member, or caregiver story that has stuck with you?

Many individuals have influenced my journey to becoming a Physician Assistant, but one person who profoundly stands out is the nurse who cared for my mother during one of the most difficult moments of my life. At 19 years old, my mother and I were living alone in Colorado when, one morning, I woke to find her unconscious. Acting quickly, I called 911, and we were transported to the nearest hospital.

While waiting for news about my mother, I felt incredibly isolated and overwhelmed. Eventually, a young nurse came to escort me to a private room, where she compassionately shared the devastating news that my mother had passed away. Recognizing my distress, she continuously checked on me throughout her shift, ensuring I felt supported and cared for amid such a tragic event.

Her attentiveness and compassion left an indelible mark on me. Despite the devastation of that day, her ability to provide comfort in a critical moment inspired me. She exemplified the kind of presence I aspire to bring to my own patients—compassionate, supportive, and steadfast during life’s most challenging moments.
