(CHARLOTTE, NC) – January 2022. In collaboration, Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates (MEMA) and Wake Emergency Physicians, PA (WEPPA) are working through the Triangle Community Foundation to award up to $10,000 in scholarship funds.

Tim Lietz, MD, President of MEMA says, “MEMA’s ongoing commitment to improving diversity in Emergency Medicine remains a priority and knowing our values are aligned with Novant’s, an integral strategic partner, gives hope there is enough support to work towards making a meaningful difference in healthcare, starting with our students.”

The scholarship fund was created out of a desire to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the medical field and specifically in emergency medicine. Scholarships are awarded to second year MD or DO students or first-year Physician Assistant students who identify as underrepresented minorities, based on the UNC System definition, and are attending school in North Carolina or at Meharry Medical College in Tennessee.

Jennifer Raley, MD, FACEP, WEPPA’s Managing Partner shares “We are grateful MEMA joins us in recognizing the importance of taking steps to ensure that the individuals providing emergency care throughout North Carolina to better reflect the communities they serve.  The partnership between MEMA and WEPPA exemplifies how like-minded physicians can work together to increase diversity and equity within emergency medicine.  This scholarship is only a start.”

“Recognizing Novant Health’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is exciting to see one of our trusted partners, MEMA, commit to creating life changing opportunities for historically under-represented students who are focused on healthcare” says Sid Fletcher, MD, Senior Vice President – Chief Clinical Officer Novant Health-Core Charlotte Market.

The application deadline is March 1, 2022 and applicants must use the Foundation’s online application portal.

Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates (MEMA) was founded in 1976.  MEMA is a physician-owned medical practice of more than 120 emergency and acute medical care clinicians that serves the greater Charlotte and Piedmont areas of North Carolina, and the team that staffs Novant’s Charlotte-area hospital emergency departments.
