MEMA Physician Spotlight: Meet Dr. Josh Loyd, MD
Mid Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates, PLLC (MEMA) is thrilled to welcome Dr. Josh Loyd to our practice.
He is serving as an Emergency Medical Physician and Medical Director for Novant Health’s Critical Care Transport and Med Flight programs.
Dr. Loyd will continue the MEMA tradition of delivering exceptional service and care for our partners. We sat down with Josh and asked him a few questions.
Why did you choose Emergency Medicine?
Before I went to medical school, I was a firefighter, and these days in firefighting you end up doing more medicine than fighting fire. I quickly learned that I enjoyed treating patients and could give back more as a physician. While at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for medical school I quickly realized this was the path for me, and excelled, graduating top of my class (1 of 191).
You recently won an ACEP award, can you tell us more about it?
Sure, I competed and won ‘Best Faculty Discussant’ at the 2018 National Emergency Medicine CPC Semi-Final Competition for the clinical, pathological case presentation. I traveled to San Diego in October to compete in the national competition alongside other Emergency medical residents. We presented cases to solve with the best faculty discussant winning this national competition. Although I didn’t win it all, I left San Diego with a wealth of knowledge that will help me better serve the patients I care for at Novant Health.
Anything else on the horizon?
Yes. I am traveling to the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) meeting in Austin later this month to present my research on the Effect of Physician Response to the Scene on EMS System Performance and Patient Care.
You’re currently the Medical Director for Novant Health Critical Care Transport and Novant Health Med Flight, what excites you about this opportunity?
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with highly trained nurses, paramedics, and EMTs to improve the care provided to our patients who require the highest level of out-of-hospital care. We deliver critical care resources to wherever there are needed, and I get to be a part of a growing team with great support from Novant and Med-Trans.
Why did you decide to join MEMA?
Their reputation with other physicians in the area is unsurpassed, pair that with the opportunity to help move the critical care transport team to the next level and it was a no-brainer to join MEMA.
