Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates emergency medicine specialist holds ranking medical job in the state.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Jan. 9, 2023) — Col. (Dr.) Daniel J. Martinie, a board-certified emergency physician with Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates (MEMA), has been appointed State Air Surgeon (SAS), North Carolina Air National Guard. As the senior medical officer for the state, Col. Martinie serves as the primary liaison between medical units, the Adjutant General (TAG), and the Air National Guard Surgeon General (NGB/SG).
“Dr. Martinie’s constant focus is the well-being of his patients and the Airmen he serves, and he truly embodies servant leadership,” says Michael Icenhour, Chief Operating Officer, MEMA. “We are proud to call him one of our own as he expands his time and expertise in care to manage critical medical needs for those who serve our country.”
The SAS oversees operations for medical aerospace medicine and aeromedical issues in North Carolina, ensuring that the state maintains appropriate force health protection measures. The role advises on medical aspects of homeland security and other medical matters and coordinates with the state’s Army National Guard Surgeon and other Air Surgeons within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) region to prepare contingencies for response to medical, public health and other emergencies.
Col. Martinie has served his country for 27 years. His military career began when he received a direct commission into the U.S. Air Force while studying medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. After graduation and completion of Commissioned Officer Training, he completed a transitional internship at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base. He attended the School of Aerospace Medicine and was qualified as a flight surgeon in 2000.
Col. Martinie held several other active-duty roles before leaving active duty for the Air National Guard in 2005, where he deployed in support of multiple contingency operations, including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, IRT Arctic Care, and Hurricane Katrina. With more than 440 hours as an aircrew member in multiple aircraft types, Col. Martinie has also served as the Chief of Aerospace Medicine 145th Medical Group.
In his civilian capacity, he is a board-certified emergency medicine physician with MEMA in Charlotte.
“The logistics of Air Force operations and medical requirements within that dynamic are complex and fast-moving – and are a critical element of keeping our squadrons and aviators safe,” says Col. Martinie. “It’s an honor to have a seat at the table in this type of capacity to protect and care for fellow comrades.”
