APP Spotlight: Whitney K. Lloyd, FNP

Tell us why you choose UNCC for nursing school?

I chose to attend UNCC Nursing School because it is one of the few graduate schools in North Carolina that does not teach solely online. I learn best from being hands-on and interacting with others and so I was looking for that approach when finding the right school for me.

Why did you choose the field of medicine?

The field of medicine involves interacting with people and patients and that excited me. Sitting and working at a desk and answering phones all day was not what I was interested in pursuing.  Nursing and medicine were attractive because I saw the opportunity to make a difference in others’ lives.

What about becoming a nurse practitioner was attractive?

The opportunity for growth is unlimited. In the beginning stages of my career as an RN, I was overwhelmed with the feeling that I was never going to learn it all, but with time and experience came confidence. After 8 years of nursing, I felt I was ready to take my learning and patient care beyond the bedside and to the next level for my own professional development.

How did you come to choose Emergency Medicine as your specialty?

Emergency Medicine was by far the most intimidating specialty, however, I found it the most intriguing.

What do you enjoy most about your day to day practice?

The variety that comes with providing care in the Emergency Department. Each patient is an opportunity; a learning opportunity, a teaching opportunity, and an opportunity to positively change a life. I enjoy coming to work knowing that these opportunities are waiting for me each day.

What led you to practice with MEMA?

In my 8 years practicing as a registered nurse in the emergency department, I have had the opportunity to better understand the important role of the nurse practitioner individually, as well as the vital role the position plays as a pivotal member of the healthcare team. The team, as a whole, is instrumental in helping our patients achieve optimal health.

I continue to learn from many remarkable MEMA physicians and mid-level providers while working beside them in the emergency department. Several of these providers undeniably have had a major impact on my understanding and desire to be a nurse practitioner. While observing these physicians and mid-levels provide high-quality, collaborative care to their patients, I have gained an expanding interest in my own role as a nurse practitioner.

Are you a member of any associations, societies, or organizations?

Yes, I am a member of both the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the Metrolina Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP).

Have you received any awards or been recognized from your peers?

I was honored with UNCC’s School of Nursing’s Excellence in Dedication to Serving the Profession Award when I graduated from my FNP Program in May 2018.

What about Charlotte excites you?

There are a lot of things, but I love most the unique combination of new, modern attractions alongside its old southern charm.

What are your interests outside of work?

My rescue pup Jax, who is a handsome husky/boxer mix. Also, I enjoy watching sports, primarily pro football. Go Vikings!

What is next in your Netflix queue?

Game of Thrones – I just can’t seem to get into it. But I will try and try again!!

Do you have any Hobbies, interests, secret powers that are unique to you?

My hobbies typically include outdoor adventures, throwing weights around at the gym, or anything involving the lake!
