Please tell us which program you chose for your Physician Assistant studies. Why did this program make the top of your list?

I attended Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Virginia, for my Master of Physician Assistant education. EVMS made the top of my list because it is a well-established program known for its high-quality clinical rotation sites and a strong focus on community engagement. I also felt the program was unique in that it incorporated Point of Care Ultrasound training over the entirety of the didactic curriculum. Of course, a great bonus was the location by the beach!

Tell us more about how you came to choose the field of medicine. What about becoming a PA was attractive?

I grew up watching my father work as a Registered Nurse in emergency and critical care settings, which sparked my interest in healthcare early on. Later, working in the hospital myself, I saw the PA role in action and knew I wanted to pursue this career to help diagnose and treat patients as part of a collaborative team with Physicians.

How did you choose Emergency Medicine as your specialty?

My prior experience working as a trauma tech and EMT initially drew me towards acute care. During my PA education, I thoroughly enjoyed the Emergency Medicine rotation. EM has a high level of procedural and investigative work, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Every day is different, and I find helping people with some of the most unexpected events in their lives to be very rewarding.

Ultimately, I found myself missing EM on subsequent rotations, which is what solidified my decision to pursue the specialty.

What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day practice?

The most rewarding part is the face-to-face interactions with patients. Forming those connections with patients and supporting them in their care is what I enjoy most as a PA.

What led you to practice with MEMA?

I heard great things about MEMA from other providers in the community, which is what initially sparked my interest. I desired to work for a group that had a great sense of camaraderie and would best support my growth as an EM provider long-term and MEMA fit perfectly.

Has there been one patient, staff member, or caregiver story that has stuck with you?

While working on a trauma unit, I remember a patient who had been through a particularly difficult injury. Despite the pain and challenges of recovery, they showed incredible resilience and determination every day. I’ll never forget his smile the day we discharged him after a two-month admission. Watching him push forward through both physical and emotional hardships really inspired me, and it is something I carry with me to this day.

What are some of the biggest challenges of your practice, for a clinician practicing in the emergency department?

One of the biggest challenges will be managing the high volume of patients each shift. ER wait times can be frustrating for both patients and providers. It’s essential to strike a balance between efficiency and thoroughness, ensuring that each patient receives the proper care they need.

Are you a member of any associations, societies, or organizations? Any leadership roles?

I am a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA)

Have you received any awards or been recognized by your peers? If so, tell us about it!

Before becoming a Physician Assistant, I received the Daisy Team Award and a Values in Action Award while working on a trauma stepdown unit as a tech here in Charlotte. It was an honor to be recognized by my peers.

What about Charlotte excites you?

I’m originally from the Charlotte area and am also a UNC Charlotte alumna, so I’m excited to be close to family and friends again. I also love the area for its diverse food scene and the variety of events that happen year-round.

Do you have any Hobbies, interests, or secret powers that are unique to you?

I enjoy spending time with my two retired racing greyhounds, Renee and Negan, as well as traveling to greyhound group events. I also love the outdoors, especially when surrounded by stunning views. Some of my favorite hikes have been through the Columbia River Gorge, Glacier National Park, and Mount Rainier.
