Please tell us which program you chose for your Physician Assistant studies. Why did this program make the top of your list?

I attended Mary Baldwin University in Fishersville, VA for PA school. During the interview process, faculty took the time to have meaningful conversations with me which left a strong impression. The program emphasized early and consistent patient interaction throughout the didactic year. I liked this approach and felt it would prepare me well for clinical practice.

Tell us more about how you came to choose the field of medicine. What about becoming a PA was attractive?

Since high school I wanted to be a PA, but after shadowing, I was drawn to the collaborative nature as well as the flexibility and broad scope being a PA offers. During my undergrad program, I worked as both an EMT and a tech in the emergency room, which solidified my passion for patient care. I love the meaningful interactions with patients and the constant opportunity to learn and grow in the field.

How did you choose Emergency Medicine as your specialty?

Before PA school, I was drawn to the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of emergency medicine. During my clinical rotations, I found that I enjoyed the wide variety of conditions you encounter each day, utilizing a broad and dynamic medical knowledge base. I also appreciate the hands-on aspect and the opportunity to perform various procedures as part of everyday practice.

What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day practice?

I genuinely enjoy connecting with patients and helping ease the fear and stress that often come with a visit to the emergency room. Taking the time to listen, reassure, and explain what’s happening can make a meaningful difference in someone’s experience. Being a calming presence during what is often a chaotic and overwhelming time is one of the most rewarding parts of working in emergency medicine.

What led you to practice with MEMA?

What drew me to MEMA was their post-graduate certificate program. This program is an excellent transition for new graduates, enabling participants to build upon their clinical skills and knowledge while practicing at the top of their license under the guidance of expert mentors. I’ve heard nothing but great things about MEMA and I’m excited to work here!

Has there been one patient, staff member, or caregiver story that has stuck with you?

Throughout my training, there have been many patient encounters that have stayed with me, but one in particular stands out. During a clinical rotation in the pediatric emergency department, I assisted in caring for a young patient, and afterward, the parents thanked me for taking the time to answer all their questions and clearly explain what was happening.

That moment reminded me of the power of compassionate communication and its importance in ensuring that patients and their families feel heard, supported, and informed.

What are some of the biggest challenges of your practice, for a clinician practicing in the emergency department?

One of the biggest challenges I have encountered during my clinical rotations has been high patient volumes, often resulting from limited access to primary care and specialty appointments. Patients boarding the ED can tie up resources, leading longer to wait times and increased stress on the entire system.
