Please tell us which program you chose for your Physician Assistant studies. Why did this program make the top of your list?

I attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham for my Physician Assistant studies. I chose UAB primarily because of the program’s mission to prepare students for diverse healthcare settings and underserved populations with an emphasis on evidence-based practice. In addition, during my interview process, I recognized the extensive support and passion the faculty provided to the program.

Tell us more about how you came to choose the field of medicine. What about becoming a PA was attractive?

I was born with sensorineural hearing loss and was surrounded by various healthcare professionals growing up, which piqued my interest in medicine. During my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to work in the ED as a patient care technician, where I recognized the key role of PAs in bridging the gaps of healthcare disparities and access to care. Early on, I recognized the importance of teamwork and collaboration, both of which the field of medicine and the PA profession thrive on.

How did you choose Emergency Medicine as your specialty?

I chose emergency medicine for several reasons. I enjoy a fast-paced environment and the idea of immediate results. In addition, I enjoy the opportunity to impact a patient’s life immediately. Lastly, this specialty is a “jack-of-all-trades” and provides a constant space for growth to learn, revise, and provide a more positive outcome with each patient encounter.

What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day practice?

Although new to emergency medicine, what I enjoy most about day-to-day practice is never knowing what is going to walk through the door. I enjoy treating patients with numerous diverse backgrounds, and with each patient encounter, I am grateful for the opportunity to expand upon my knowledge and training to continue to grow as a provider.

What led you to practice with MEMA?

I was looking for emergency medicine groups in Charlotte and came across MEMA. Shortly after, I spoke with John Murphy, who told me about the PA-NP fellowship, which was very convincing. After interviewing with the amazing team, I knew this was exactly what I was looking for and wanted to be a part of. I enjoy the personalized work environment and am so grateful for the opportunity to join the MEMA PA-NP fellowship.

Has there been one patient, staff member, or caregiver story that has stuck with you?

During my clinical year of training, I had an elderly patient arrive in the ED with shortness of breath for over 6 months. After speaking with my preceptor and ordering extensive tests, imaging showed a suspicious mass in her chest. My preceptor and I went to her room and spoke to her about her results, and she broke down in tears holding my hand. It was at this moment I recognized what a powerful gift it is to comfort a patient on what could be the worst day of their life and to never take that for granted.

Are you a member of any associations, societies, or organizations? Any leadership roles?

During my first semester of didactic training at PA school, I was elected Vice President of my cohort. I had the opportunity to build strong relationships collaborating with both faculty and students of all cohorts.

What about Charlotte excites you?

During my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to visit Charlotte and immediately fell in love with its blend of southern charm and diverse environment. I also love the ambiance the city provides, with something to do for everyone: food, art, sports, nature—you name it!

Do you have any hobbies, interests, or secret powers that are unique to you?

In my free time, I enjoy working out, spending time with friends, and taking walks with my yellow labrador retriever, Boone. Lastly, of course, I enjoy watching Alabama football on Saturdays (Roll Tide!)
