(CHARLOTTE, NC) June 13, 2019 – James R. Young, MD, a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist with the Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates, PLLC (MEMA), a leader in emergency care, conducted a new pediatric asthma pathways trial at NHPMC Hemby Children’s Emergency Department.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 11 children, over 7 million, have asthma and the average annual medical cost for a family is $1,000 per child. MEMA’s clinical team introduced the Pathways for Improving Pediatric Asthma Care (PIPA) Project which began in February 2018 and ran through March 2019.

Led by Dr. Young, PIPA’s primary focus was standardization of care, more assertive treatment measures and elimination of waste. This included the use of a validated, objective asthma scoring system used in Emergency Department triage and throughout the patient’s hospital stay, early administration of a steroid and prompt administration of adjunctive therapies such as magnesium sulfate and ipratropium bromide.

“The results were outstanding,” said Dr. Young. “Our clinical team is dedicated to exceptional care for our patients and we were thrilled to meet the goals set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as the standard of care and to have partnered with NHPMC Hemby Children’s ED to accomplish this.”

The trial’s outcomes lead to a decrease inpatient length of stay by 12% during peak months (September – February), decreased transfers from ED to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) by 50% and a decrease in readmission to the ED (within 7 days) by 67%. The NHPMC Hemby Children’s ED continues to work on the project with ongoing collaboration amongst the Pediatric ED, Pediatric ICU, Pediatric Pulmonology, Pediatric Inpatient Specialists, and Respiratory Therapy. MEMA will train and educate ED clinicians and staff on the PIPA standardization which will be implemented at all Novant Hospital EDs in the Charlotte region staffed by MEMA.

Founded in 1976, MEMA is an independent physician-owned team of more than 85 emergency and acute medical care clinicians that serves the greater Charlotte and Piedmont areas of North Carolina, and the team that staffs Novant Health’s Charlotte-area emergency departments.
